IMPORT / EXPORT UTILITY RUNNING EXTREMELY SLOW
Applies to:
Oracle Server – Enterprise Edition – Version: 8.0.3.0 to 11.1.0.7
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Symptoms
The Oracle Import/Export utility is experiencing extremely slow performance with minimal number of records/rows being imported/exported.
Cause
Tracing is enabled in your sqlnet.ora file, and the imp/exp connection is generating trace information in a trace file as the imp/exp proceeeds.
Solution
Ensure that SQL*Net tracing is completely disabled. Even if your import/export is being done with a bequeath connection (BEQ), the connection will utilize the trace levels set in SQLNET.ORA.
Be sure that TRACE_LEVEL_SERVER and TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT are set to OFF in sqlnet.ora prior to starting an import or export.
Review of the sqlnet.ora configuration file in the $TNS_ADMIN directory (eg. $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin or $ORACLE_HOME/net80/admin or ora_root:[network.admin] on OpenVMS ). For example:
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = ADMIN
should be changed to:
TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT = OFF
Solution Explanation:
The generation of trace files is an I/O intensive and cpu consuming process.
This can have the effect of causing significant slowdowns in application performance.
Search Order for TNS files – listener.ora, sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora ..etc.
Applies to:
Oracle Net Services – Version: 9.2.0.1 to 11.0
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Goal
The goal of this document is to have understanding on how Oracle Net searches for the configuration files listener.ora, sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora and cman.ora. This understanding would be useful while troubleshooting Oracle Net issues.
Solution
Oracle Net Services configuration files are not always located in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory. Depending on the file, Oracle Net uses a different search order to locate the file.
Search order for the sqlnet.ora
1. The directory specified by the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, if set .
2. The $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.
Search order for the cman.ora, listener.ora, and tnsnames.ora
1. The directory specified by the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, if set.
2. One of the following directories:
On Solaris:
/var/opt/oracle
On other platforms:
/etc
3. The $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.
